The Region of the Ústí-County

Population, Labour and Education

The development and structure of the population has to be strongly considered within the context of the history of the 20th century.
Northern Bohemia is an territory which was mainly settled and cultivated by Germans until 1945. The settlement began in the course of the so-called eastern colonisation which reached its highest peak between the 12th-14th century.
With the expulsion of the German people by Czechs after the end of the Second World War in 1945, a long-lasting tradition vanished more or less within month. The following resettlement mainly comprised Czechs, Slovaks and Romas.

From 1948 until the 80ies a continuous growth of the population can be determined. Except for some slight variations, the population can be considered as constant at present time.
In the 90ies there was a shift from people from the rural villages within the border region to bigger cities or industrial centers, respectively. Since some years the people seem to move the other way around.

In the county of Ústí about 819,712 habitants life here and the density of population is with 154 h/m 2 comparable high (Czech Republic: 129 h/m2).
Yet, the settlement is inhomogeneously distributed and concentrated in towns like Ústí nad Labem, Decín, Teplice, Chomutov and Most. In contrast, the higher parts of the Ceské Stredohorí Mountains and especially those of the Krusny hory Mountains are only sparsely populated. With an average age of 38.3 years the population is fairly young.

The unemployment rate is twice as high as in the ‚rest‘ of the Czech Republic whereas the unemployment rate of the women is slightly higher than of the men. A very remarkable phenomenon is the approximate doubling of the unemployment rate between 1995 and 2002.

Many jobs are related with the coal mining and thus, after the decline of it a new increase of unemployment must be expected if no measures are taken before.
